Hats off? If betting on both coaches to not wear hats in Super Bowl 47, John Harbaugh has to be your man

January 24, 2013

A quick Google search reveals that it’s essentially impossible to find a photo of Jim Harbaugh coaching on a football field without wearing a hat.

Why should you care?

Well, the first Super Bowl prop bets have started rolling out, and BetOnline came up with a fairly interesting one.

hats prop

*Note: This bet will be graded in the first quarter, and it has a max right now of only $50.

Now, whenever you picture either Jim or John Harbaugh in your head, they’re both probably wearing hats. That’s because, most of the time, they are wearing hats during games.

But instead of focusing on every game they’ve ever coached, what about only games coached in a dome, as Super Bowl 47 will be played inside the Superdome in New Orleans? The weather doesn’t play a factor, and you don’t have to worry about the wind messing up your ‘do, right? We went back through every NFL game that either Harbaugh has coached indoors, and here are the findings.

JOHN HARBAUGH

2012 | Week 7 at Houston | Hat
2011 | Week 3 at St. Louis | Hat
2010 | Week 14 at Houston | No hat!
2010 | Week 10 at Atlanta | No hat!
2009 | Divisional Round at Indianapolis | No hat!
2009 | Week 6 at Minnesota | No hat!
2008 | Week 16 at Dallas | Hat
2008 | Week 10 at Houston | No photos of Harbaugh
2008 | Week 6 at Indianapolis | No hat!

JIM HARBAUGH

2012 | NFC Championship at Atlanta | Hat
2012 | Week 13 at St. Louis | Hat
2012 | Week 12 at New Orleans | Hat
2012 | Week 8 at Arizona | Hat
2012 | Week 3 at Minnesota | Hat
2011 | Week 17 at St. Louis | Hat
2011 | Week 14 at Arizona | Hat
2011 | Week 6 at Detroit | Hat

VS. EACH OTHER (OUTDOORS)

2011 | Week 12 in Baltimore | Both wearing hats

So, if you’re going to take a chance on the “No” side of this bet at a +600 payout, you’re pretty much relying on John to pull you to victory.

What’s up with John, anyway? Five of his first six games in a dome he went hatless, but in each of the past two years he’s gone back to the cap.

Is he worried about a receding hairline? Will he want to show his younger brother that he’s better looking than him? Is he self-conscious about his image? Will Jim throw us all a curveball and prove that he’s “different” than his older brother by going hatless?

These are all important questions to ask yourself before placing a bet this serious.

Our pick: No. Too much value to pass up at +600.
