Who made the biggest impressions? Six NFL teams going ‘up’ or ‘down’ heading into Week 3

September 19, 2012

Back in May, Cantor Gaming released point spreads for every NFL game this season. And every week, the LVH SuperBook releases look-ahead lines for one week ahead.

Using both of those point spreads and comparing them to the actual Week 3 numbers currently available at YouWager, we can come up with a rough answer to the question, “Which NFL teams made the biggest impressions in Week 2?”

GOING UP

  1. St. Louis Rams | Should we thank Josh Morgan for this? Morgan’s spike off Cortland Finnegan late in the game helped give the Rams a surprise victory over Washington this past weekend, and now they’ve moved from +10.5 (in last week’s look-ahead lines) to +7.5 at Chicago this weekend. St. Louis is 2-0 against the spread and would also be 2-0 straight up if not for giving up a last-second drive to the Lions in Week 1.
  2. Miami Dolphins | After a humiliating season-opener at Houston, the Dolphins actually ranked dead last in our Week 2 Public Perception Rankings, meaning we thought bettors were more down on them than any other team in the league. But a 35-13 trouncing of Oakland over the weekend has changed that, and now Miami has moved from a 4.5-point home underdog to +3 against the division rival Jets. Somewhat remarkably, the Fins were favored by a point in this game in the lines released over the summer.
  3. Seattle Seahawks | Before the season, the Packers were favored by six on the road at Seattle in this week’s edition of Monday Night Football. Then, in the look-ahead lines, it moved down to five. And now, after the Seahawks’ 27-7 thumping of Dallas, the line has moved all the way down to Green Bay -3.5. Seattle is a fantastic home team, and that should only be amplified in the Monday Night atmosphere.

GOING DOWN

  1. Tennessee Titans | Chris Johnson can’t run, Jake Locker can’t throw, and the Tennessee defense can’t stop anyone. Believe it or not, the Titans were actually 1-point favorites at home over Detroit in the look-ahead lines, but that’s shifted all the way to Detroit -3, and it wouldn’t be surprising to see it continue to climb. Keep in mind, this is against a Lions teams that’s 0-2 against the spread.
  2. Denver Broncos | Peyton Manning can’t throw the ball down the field. Have you heard that? HE CAN’T THROW THE BALL DOWN THE FIELD! Anyway, the Broncos were 2.5-point favorites at home over the Texans until Manning’s three-interception trainwreck on Monday Night Football, and now the line has moved all the way to Houston -2. It was a pick ‘em before the season, so this point spread has been all over the map.
  3. Kansas City Chiefs | Both the Chiefs and Saints are 0-2 and looking awful on defense, yet New Orleans moved from a 6.5-point favorite to 8.5-point chalk based solely on the two team’s Week 2 results. This obviously isn’t a result of the suddenly dysfunctional Saints “going up,” so this line shift is entirely a result of the Chiefs “going down.”
