Will there be a Triple Crown winner? Union Rags a favorite, but the odds aren’t appealing

May 4, 2012

Everyone loves rooting for the Triple Crown in horse racing, and that’s probably the reason the following prop bet is available at BetOnline.

Triple Crown odds

Considering there hasn’t been a Triple Crown winner since Affirmed did it in 1978, the odds seem a little low on “Yes,” don’t they?

That’s 33 years we’ve gone without a Triple Crown winner, and you’re only going to get 6-to-1 on your money if you correctly predict that it happens in 2012?

But it’s not like you should really lay the juice on it not to happen, either. After all, if a horse wins the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, you’ll be the only person in America cheering against it when the Belmont Stakes rolls around in June.

We haven’t seen a winner since 1978, but we’ve had no shortage of “close calls.” Here’s a list of horses who have come close since Affirmed did it more than three decades ago.

By the way, Sportsbook’s odds on specific horses to win the Triple Crown aren’t much more enticing.
