Before the Kentucky Derby, the odds of there being a Triple Crown winner was set at 6.5-to-1.

But after Orb, the favorite, captured the first leg on Saturday, it suddenly looks like we might be on the verge of seeing the first Triple Crown winner since Affirmed in 1978.

Three months before most of us had even heard of I’ll Have Another, his trainer, Doug O’Neill, showed enough confidence in his horse to place a $100 bet on him to win the Kentucky Derby.

O’Neill got great bang for his buck, and that confidence was rewarded on Monday with a huge payday.

There will be no Triple Crown winner in horse racing again this year. I’ll Have Another—the winner of both the Kentucky Derby and Preakness—was scratched from this weekend’s Belmont Stakes with a left leg issue.

It’s a gigantic headache for every oddsmaker.

We’ve had decent success with sports-themed television props in the past, and a Belmont Stakes prop released on Wednesday by Bovada is particularly intriguing.

By relying on video evidence, we think we’ve identified a strong play for the Belmont, which will run on Saturday, June 9th.

Betting on horses is a confusing, convoluted process that most amateur bettors don’t understand and don’t care to learn.

But could new, easier-to-understand offerings help attract more interest?

Bodemeister fell apart late in Saturday’s Kentucky Derby, but he’s favored to earn the victory in next week’s Preakness Stakes at Pimlico.

Sportsbook released odds for 15 horses, and Bodemeister is listed as a 3-to-1 favorite ahead of Derby winner I’ll Have Another (+400) and Union Rags (+600).

If you think Union Rags — or any other horse, for that matter — will break the 33-year drought of no Triple Crown winners, you can place a bet on it at an offshore sportsbook.

But the odds don’t seem even close to enticing enough to make the wager.

A 72-year-old woman saw an advertisement for a Pick 6 at a New Mexico racetrack and then decided to give it a shot, parting with a whole dime while hoping for a five-figure payday.

Then, she watched as all six horses she selected won their respective races.

The 2012 Kentucky Derby is still about 2 1/2 weeks away, but there are already odds available from at least a couple offshore sportsbooks.
