College basketball futures

The question comes up often in every sport, but especially during March Madness: “Would I be better off taking my team’s current futures odds, or should I just bet them on the money line every game and roll over the winnings each time into the next round?”

The new money-line rollover spreadsheet (courtesy of a BTB Forum member) can help you determine the correct answer.

The ESPN/USA Today college basketball coaches’ poll was released Wednesday afternoon and Indiana will begin as the No. 1 team in the country.

The Hoosiers currently have the third best odds to win the national championship behind Kentucky (+500) and North Carolina State (+650).

UCLA has struggled since advancing to three straight Final Fours from 2006 to 2008, but the Bruins’ futures odds are on the rise after signing the nation’s top-rated recruiting class.

Bovada sportsbook currently has the Bruins listed at 20/1 to win the national title.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist and Kentucky have one net-cutting ceremony under their belts.

And now that the Final Four field is set, and the Wildcats are the only No. 1 seed still alive, they’re significant favorites at every offshore sportsbook to earn their first national title in more than a decade.

Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Darius Miller and Kentucky keep rolling right along through the 2012 NCAA Tournament, and futures odds at Bovada have them as even more of an overwhelming favorite to win it all.

But the Wildcats must traverse through a very talented remaining field, one of the best Elite Eights — from top to bottom — that we’ve had in years.

Kenny Boynton and Florida kept rolling on Thursday night to advance to the Elite Eight and now have a great chance to become the first No. 7 seed ever to advance to the Final Four.

Could the Gators’ opponent in the Final Four be Tu Holloway and 10th-seeded Xavier? The odds are certainly against the Musketeers, who must navigate through an imposing schedule the next two games to become the first No. 10 seed ever to make it.

Jared Sullinger and Ohio State have been impressive through the first couple rounds of the NCAA Tournament, and the Buckeyes are listed at +550 to win the national title at Bovada.

But what if you could have Ohio State and Michigan State? Plus Wisconsin. And throw in Indiana as well. One sportsbook is offering just that, and the Big Ten is the favorite to cut the nets in a couple weeks.

North Carolina cruised to two easy victories in the opening weekend of the 2012 NCAA Tournament, looking like a strong threat for the national title.

But the possible loss of point guard Kendall Marshall — whose status is uncertain after fracturing a bone in his non-shooting wrist in Sunday’s win over Creighton — would severely damage those dreams. And the updated futures odds reflect that.

If you foresaw Colorado’s surprise run to the Pac-12 championship game, you’re sitting pretty with a +2200 futures ticket.

But that’s just one example of many dark horses making runs in a conference tournament season that’s been filled with upsets.

They say the season starts over with conference tournaments in March. Every team’s record goes back to 0-0, and everyone is given an equal chance to make the Big Dance.

For Texas Tech, those chances are slim. Very, very slim.
