A strange thing happened this summer when Arkansas fired head coach Bobby Petrino and replaced him with John L. Smith, an epic failure at Michigan State and also (presumably) at life.
The Razorbacks’ season win total didn’t budge. Like, not at all.
It was 8.5 with Petrino and without him, a clear indication that the market didn’t think his presence (or lack thereof) would have much of an impact on the 2012 Razorbacks.
Smith was viewed as a a steady hand, the type of coach who could help keep things together for a season and lead Arkansas to prominence. Instead, the program has completely folded under his watch, and with incredible efficiency.
The calendar has yet to flip to October, and already Arkansas will be unable to live up to its preseason expectations. Saturday’s humiliating 58-10 loss—the Razorbacks’ fourth straight—dropped their overall record to 1-4.
Which means they can’t finish better than 8-4.
Which means they can’t surpass their season win total.
Before the season, 5Dimes sportsbook released over/unders for all 124 FBS teams. In addition to Arkansas, four others have already been decided:
- Duke 3.5 (current record: 4-1)
- Southern Miss 8.5 (0-4)
- Houston 9.5 (1-3)
- UTSA 4.5 (5-0)
