In some cases (like making Alabama the favorite in the SEC or Louisville in the Big East), the odds were spot on. In others (like putting Kansas State at 22-to-1 to win the Big 12 or Stanford at +2500 in the Pac-12), they weren’t.
Listed below are the preseason odds to win each conference, and champions are highlighted in red. The biggest surprise easily came in the Pac-12, where Oregon and USC were heavy favorites to win their respective divisions before their “inevitable” meeting in the title game.
UCLA (+1650 to win the North) and Stanford (+775 to win the South) had other plans.
