Odds & Ends is BTB’s look at betting stories making headlines both in newspapers and on the Web.
SI’s Peter King is one of the biggest NFL “insiders” out there, and he’s been traveling across the country making daily stops at each team’s training camp.
His latest stop left him impressed, to say the least.
Appearing on the Dan Patrick Show on Thursday morning, King was asked when he’d make his Super Bowl pick, and he hinted that he really likes the Kansas City Chiefs. (He visited Chiefs camp on Wednesday.)
“I’ll tell ya, I like Kansas City a lot,” King said. “They’ve got incredible skill position players, [especially] when Dwayne Bowe comes back in. Plus, I’m of the mind, I don’t know who it’s going to be, but I’m going to pick a weird team as one of [the Super Bowl participants]. I just think there’s so many teams, and so many teams are close.”
Patrick responded, “Wow, sounds like somebody’s leaning on Kansas City.”
King laughed, “I don’t know, it’s hard,” and then went on to say he’ll feel crazy if he doesn’t pick the New England Patriots.
Does King really think Kansas City will win the Super Bowl, or is this just a classic case of selective recall given that he most recently visited Chiefs camp?
Kansas City is currently a 58-to-1 longshot to win the Super Bowl at 5Dimes.
LOTTERY WINNER’S STRANGE WISH
So, a down-to-earth couple in Scotland won a EuroMillions jackpot worth £148 million and have been making plenty of news since.
Adrian Bayford, a music shop owner, and his wife Gillian offered to give a portion of the winnings to his business partner, who promptly refused, saying, “I don’t want a penny of it.”
Turns out, Bayford also has a long-lost half-brother he’s never met.
And now, Bayford is trying to reunite his favorite band, Guns N’ Roses, with some of his newfound millions. One band member, though, is adamant it’ll never happen, saying, “I don’t think there’s a price tag that anybody’s put in front of us that’s going to make that work.”
C’mon, there has to be some amount of money that’d be enough to sway them, right?
ODDS & ENDS
- Ever been a part of an extremely hot craps table? Chances are it didn’t even come close to the lady in this video, who went 154 straight rolls without hitting a seven, a streak that lasted 4 hours, 18 minutes.
- Week 2 of the NFL preseason kicks off tonight with two games. The Falcons are 4-point favorites at home over the Bengals, and the Packers are field-goal favorites against the Browns. There’s some good discussion getting underway in the BTB Sports Betting Forum.
- Sports betting laws couldn’t be more different in the U.S. than they are in Australia, where gambling ads overwhelm sports broadcasts because it’s “a tradeoff that sporting bodies happily accept in exchange for access to the gambling industry’s money.”
- “Would you rather owe money to a bank or to someone you can kill?” Hmm, seems like an easy answer, but apparently not for 23-year-old Andrew Toon Wong, who murdered two people he owed a total of $9,000 in gambling debts. Huh?
