There are two top-10 teams in the Associated Press poll that Las Vegas oddsmakers don’t think belong, and coincidentally, both teams have delivered the most impressive wins in the first month of the college football season.
Care to guess which teams Vegas isn’t taking seriously just yet? Take a look for yourself:
1. Alabama 8-5
2. Oregon 8-1
3. LSU 4-1
4. Florida State 6-1
5. Georgia 7-1
6. South Carolina 20-1
7. Kansas State 50-1
8. Stanford 50-1
9. West Virginia 25-1
10. Notre Dame 20-1
As you might expect, nobody is buying Kansas State (50/1) as a legitimate national title contender, even after the Wildcats dismantled then-No. 6 Oklahoma with a 24-19 victory Saturday as a 14-point road underdog.
K-State, much like last year, is more substance than style and continues to win in ways that fool statistical analysts and box score observers. Thing is, unlike the six teams in front of them—all of whom have odds between 8/5 and 20/1—the Wildcats don’t have to play a conference championship game.
The four SEC teams will play each other either in season or in the conference championship game, Florida State will have to run the table and win the ACC title game (most likely against Virginia Tech), and Oregon must beat USC not once, but likely twice.
Stanford (50/1), which already beat USC, also isn’t getting much support. But the Cardinal’s closing schedule is far more difficult than K-State’s, as they’ll have to play two road games against teams currently ranked in the top 10, Oregon and Notre Dame.
Our pick to win the national title? We’ll stick with Georgia, though Alabama has easily been the most impressive team through the first four weeks.
