Back in May, Cantor Gaming released point spreads for every NFL game this season. And every week, the LVH SuperBook releases look-ahead lines for one week ahead.
Using both of those point spreads and comparing them to the actual Week 7 numbers currently available at YouWager, we can come up with a rough answer to the question, “Which NFL teams made the biggest impressions in Week 6?”
GOING UP
- New York Jets | This has to be the most topsy-turvy team in the NFL. Before last week’s 35-9 drumming of the Colts, the Jets were 13-point underdogs at New England. Now, it’s still in double digits but at only 10.5. Every team in the AFC East is tied with a 3-3 record, but the Patriots’ three losses have come by a combined four points while the Jets’ have come by a combined 57 points.
- Cleveland Browns | Yes, the Browns. No, like, really. The Browns are on the rise. Sort of. They ended any threats of an 0-16 season with an impressive 34-24 victory over the Bengals on Sunday and subsequently moved from +4 to +3 at Indianapolis in Week 7. That’s a key number, because it’s essentially saying Cleveland is an equal team with the Colts. The Browns actually rank 19th in scoring and 24th in scoring margin, so it appears we can stop treating this team like it’s the worst in the NFL.
- Dallas Cowboys | This one’s a little different because it comes after a loss, but Dallas was more than competitive in a 31-29 loss at Baltimore and very well could’ve won if not for a missed 51-yard field by Dan Bailey in the final seconds. Now, the Cowboys are 2-point favorites at Carolina (coming off a bye) after sitting at -1 last week and +1 before the season. Be careful, though: Dallas is just 4-17-1 ATS in its last 21 games as a favorite, including an 0-3 ATS mark this year (with two outright losses).
GOING DOWN
- Baltimore Ravens | Baltimore actually appeared in the “going down” section of this post last week, too, but Week 6 was not great for the Ravens despite improving to 5-1. Ray Lewis and cornerback Lardarius Webb are both out for the season, meaning Baltimore’s shift towards being an offense-oriented team is taking an accelerated course. The question, though, is if Joe Flacco and the rest of the offense are good enough to carry this team by themselves. The Ravens have moved from 3-point underdogs at Houston before the season to (currently) +6.5.
- Arizona Cardinals | This was just a matter of time, wasn’t it? The Cardinals’ 4-0 start felt like more of a mirage than anything, and now they’re coming off back-to-back losses, the last of which came at home to the struggling Bills. Arizona was a 1-point underdog at Minnesota before the season, +4 in last week’s look-ahead lines, and is now all the way up to +6. The offense ranks dead last in the league in yards per play (4.3), and Kevin Kolb is getting sacked on 10.9 percent of his dropbacks, also the worst mark in the NFL.
