Back in May, Cantor Gaming released point spreads for every NFL game this season. And every week, the LVH SuperBook releases look-ahead lines for one week ahead.
Using both of those point spreads and comparing them to the actual Week 4 numbers currently available at YouWager, we can come up with a rough answer to the question, “Which NFL teams made the biggest impressions in Week 3?”
GOING UP
- Kansas City Chiefs | Believe it or not, the Chiefs were 3-point home underdogs to the Chargers before a Week 3 upset victory at New Orleans. Now? They’re 1-point favorites, a four-point swing that is the biggest—when compared to the look-ahead lines—of any on the Week 4 card. San Diego has been favored by at least three points in its last six games at Arrowhead but has gone just 2-4 ATS.
- Atlanta Falcons | One of only four 3-0 ATS teams left in the NFL, the Falcons have been winning handily and covering, and it hasn’t even been close. After a 27-3 trouncing at San Diego, Atlanta is winning by 15.3 points and covering by more than two touchdowns per game. As 7-point home favorites against Carolina this weekend, though, this will be the first Falcons spread that is higher than a field goal. Has the market caught up?
- Houston Texans | The Texans are tied with Atlanta for the highest scoring margin in the NFL, so get ready to see some adjusted point spreads over the next few weeks, starting Sunday with Tennessee. The Titans were only 7.5-point underdogs in lines released before the season, then 10-point underdogs in last week’s look-ahead lines, but now they’re all the way up to +12 against their division rivals. (No wonder oddsmakers think this division is already locked up.)
GOING DOWN
- Philadelphia Eagles | It was just a matter of time, wasn’t it? The Eagles scraped to one-point victories in each of the first two weeks—going 0-2 ATS in the process—before getting dismantled on the road at Arizona as 3-point favorites. Now, they’ve shifted from 3.5-point favorites over the Giants at home to only -2, meaning oddsmakers went from thinking, “The Eagles are slightly better than the Giants,” to, “The Giants are slightly better than the Eagles.”
- Washington Redskins | When we first did this feature after Week 1, Robert Griffin III and the Redskins were one of the teams highlighted as “going up.” My, how quickly things can change in the NFL. Season-ending injuries to Adam Carriker and Brian Orakpo have turned the defense into a mess, and now Washington ranks 30th in the league in total defense (429.3 yards) and dead last in yards per play (6.9).
- Carolina Panthers | Did everyone overrate Cam Newton and the Panthers at the beginning of the season? It’s sure looking like we did. Before the season, Carolina was only a 4.5-point underdog at Atlanta this weekend, but now it’s a full touchdown, and it wouldn’t be that surprising to see it creep higher than that. The only win so far is against a downtrodden New Orleans team, and the next four games are against the Falcons, Seahawks, Cowboys and Bears.
