MVP race: Peyton Manning, despite Denver’s 3-3 record, listed as favorite at some books

October 18, 2012

The Peyton Manning-led Denver Broncos are on pace to have the same record they did last year, back when the guy who can’t throw, Tim Tebow, was the team’s quarterback.

So how on earth is Manning listed as the favorite to win the NFL’s MVP award, anyway?

Maybe because he’s been able to put up big numbers and lead the Broncos from behind, as he did in Monday night’s stunning 35-24 victory over the Chargers.

According to Advanced NFL Stats, Denver had less than a one percent chance to overcome a 24-0 halftime deficit. Oddsmakers were a bit more optimistic, listing the second-half odds of an outright Broncos victory anywhere between 12.5-to-1 and 16-1.

Manning went 24-of-30 for 309 yards and three touchdowns against San Diego, his third straight 300-yard, 3-TD passing day. Since getting intercepted three times in a Week 2 loss to the Falcons, Manning has thrown for 11 touchdowns against just one interception, and he’s done it with a receiving corps that often struggles to find separation (and can’t maintain their balance.)

The Broncos have faced five teams that made the playoffs last year, and their schedule will ease up considerably after the bye, with two games against the Chiefs and additional games against the Browns, Panthers, Saints and Raiders, all teams occupying last place in their respective divisions.

Manning’s biggest competitors for the MVP award? Matt Ryan (+300), Eli Manning (+500) and Tom Brady (+600).

Our pick? Peyton Manning.
