MLB playoffs odds: Yankees have ‘best chance’ to make World Series, but who will they play?

October 5, 2012

The New York Yankees didn’t clinch their own division until the regular season’s final day, but oddsmakers already list them as the early favorite to win the World Series.

The next question: Who is their most likely opponent?

For now, it appears to be a toss-up between the Reds and Nationals. Both are listed at 7-to-1 to face the Yankees in the World Series, with Yankees-Giants (+900), Yankees-Braves (+1800) and Yankees-Cardinals (+2000) trailing behind.

The odds of a Bay Area series between the Athletics and Giants is 12-to-1, while a D.C. Showdown between the Orioles and Nationals is currently 18-1.

If you plan on taking the Rangers or Cardinals, you might want to reconsider. Since 1985, only four teams in both the American League and National League have repeated as pennant winners. Only twice since 1980 have teams repeated as World Series champions.

History also isn’t on the Nationals’ side. Since 1990, only two teams that finished with the league’s best record went on to win the World Series, and both titles were won by the Yankees (1998 and 2009).

Our pick to win the World Series? We’ll tell you later today.
