As you can see, the betting has really picked up in recent years, but it was a fairly random matchup—Steelers-Seahawks in Super Bowl XL—that set the overall record in 2006 with $94.5 million. In regards to BetOnline’s prop bet, five Super Bowls have topped 90½ million dollars, and they’ve all come in the past eight years.

WHAT WILL THE NEVADA HANDLE BE ON SUPER BOWL XLVII?

That’s where oddsmaker interviews can come in handy.

“It’s a monster matchup, brother versus brother,” William Hill oddsmaker Jimmy Vaccaro told the Associated Press. “I believe it will top last year’s Super Bowl handle and could go higher.”

“It will be close to the record,” Pete Korner, founder of The Sports Club oddsmaking service in Las Vegas, told CBS Sports. “It has a lot of appeal and that interest will draw big money.”

Should we believe them? In this case, probably, yes. But it’s difficult for even them to predict.

But the important factor here is that this Super Bowl involves the San Francisco 49ers, who are currently favored by 3.5 or 4 points over the Baltimore Ravens. The Niners, located so close to Nevada, are perhaps the most popular team to bet on year in and year out at Las Vegas and Reno sportsbooks.

Our pick: Even at -125, there’s still some value on the ‘over.’
