Holy Cow! The most incredible college football head coach ATS stat you’ll ever stumble upon

September 4, 2012

We ranked Urban Meyer as our No. 1 college football ATS coach earlier this summer and broke down a handful of variables that demonstrated just how great Meyer’s teams have performed relative to oddsmaker expectations.

Incredibly, we missed a stat so outrageously awesome, so unbelievable, that we had to check it and double check it just to ensure its accuracy. (We then alerted the FBI to have them investigate possible game fixing.)

So, here we go: Meyer is 35-7 ATS all-time in nonconference games.

That’s an 83.3 percent cover rate spanning across Meyer’s 11 years as a head coach.

In a two-year stint at Bowling Green, Meyer’s teams went 5-1 ATS in non-con games and covered by an average of 11.5 points per game. Then, at Utah, Meyer went a perfect 10-0 ATS (including a pair of bowl wins) while covering the spread by nearly 10 points per game.

Meyer covered the spread by less than a touchdown at Florida, but his success rate was still pretty remarkable. His Gators went 19-6 ATS in non-con games and covered by 6.7 points per game.

This week, Ohio State opened as a 17-point favorite against Central Florida. The Buckeyes defeated Miami (Ohio) last week 56-10, easily covering the 26.5-point spread.
