Bodog has released odds: http://wp.me/p1sRnX-4m1

I think Francona will likely get the gig, which would be a decent hire, but the name that scares me most is Joe Torre. I'm a Cubs fan, and Torre's teams are always very sound.

I can't imagine he'd make a return, especially now that he has his cushy exec job. But if there was a job worth returning for, it'd probably be this one.

Thoughts?

I believe we've witnessed the end of Joe Torre's managing career. I'm under the assumption Francona gets the job and it's pretty black/white. But this comes from a baseball fan without much expertise on their in-house candidates.

By the way, I also believe LaRussa not having to deal with the Pujols situation made it easier to leave. I'm sure he had 1,000 reasons but that had to be one of them. And good for him, great time to walk away. Or stumble.

I heard that Pujols will for sure return if their third-base coach gets the job. (I think his name is Oquendo?) Can't imagine that's more than just the media blowing the story up, but still..

La Russa is one of my favorite people in all of sports. He's also a Bruce Springsteen fan. Very sad to see him go, and I say that as a lifelong Cubs fan.

personally I think LaRussa overcoaches. A big time radio personality up here best said my motto about managers in baseball.

"Managers in Baseball dont win you games, but they can lose you games" Larussa overcoaches and gets huge praise when his team wins, but doesnt get as much slack when his team loses because of his decisions.
