Wacky WAC-- RIP
As an old fart, I'm amazed at what TV has done to college football. This realignment craze has been nuts. Case in point-- San Diego St. The Big East? What will this do to recruiting? I realize they have natural rivals in Rutgers and S Florida, not to mention U Conn and Pitt.
![]() But, I'm more concerned with basketball and the other sports. In this case, SDSU will play BB in the Big West-- step down? In this case they're going from a 23rd floor suite to the 3rd sub-basement. Big West has been a one bid league for years, and adding SDSU and Hawaii won't help-- too many bad teams involved (not to mention east coast people don't even know they're alive). And now the smaller conferences are joining the realignment mess. WAC will be left with NMSU and Idaho. Idaho probably goes back to 1-AA, and who knows what NMSU will do. http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf---les...68iM4cvrYF The Sun Belt appears to be smelling like a rose in all of this. They lose Fla International and N Texas-- but pick up Texas St, Georgia St (moving up to Div 1-A) and S Alabama (now eligible in Div 1-A). They will probably try to add 2 more teams so they can have 2 6-team divisions, and a playoff. So far their commish Karl Benson (formerly of the WAC) has kept the league concentrated from east Texas to Florida-- and he'll most likely look to add teams in that region. Leagues in geographic regions are, I my opinion, the way to go. Oh--- you say it used to be that way in the old days? Who knew? These new leagues spread out from one coast to the other will run into money problems-- not to mention, if the teams aren't playing too well who wants to see a mediocre SDSU team if you're a Rutgers fan? Like Nebraska, Boise will sell out no matter who they're playing. Not so for many other teams. |

RE: Wacky WAC-- RIP
My fiancee helped with my preseason CFB work by writing down team schedules for me. She called it the Wiggity, wiggity, wiggity WAC.
What a shame. Follow me: @skatingtripods |

Yeah, it's pretty dumb in my opinion, too. Especially in the Big East/WAC/C-USA, etc nonsense that I can't even keep track of anymore. The sad part is, those smaller schools and leagues really seem like the victims. Even worse, you mentioned the money aspect. It amazes me that the greedy creators of the BCS continue to sit back and pocket millions -- millions that could've been going to our schools this whole time if we'd just done away with the scam artists behind the BCS. But they live on, and will continue to live on, because they're deep in the pockets of all the right people. All the people that have any power to change things.

It's a damn shame what has happened to the conference alignment. In particular the Big East which has a storied basketball tradition.
Hard to find better sporting events than the Big East basketball tournament... which will be missing Boston College, Syracuse, Pitt, and West Virginia. Not sure what to say about the WAC... other than it's dead. Wow. Follow me on Twitter: JayPrimetown |

RE: Wacky WAC-- RIP
It's just every man for himself right now. Every smaller school just trying to survive, and every smaller conference just praying they still exist in a few years.
It's sad. But mainly sad because it really doesn't have to be this way, if not for the people in charge.

Sad thing, at these small schools without many boosters, the common student will have to eat the additional travel costs via a tuition increase. A lot of kids are jaded enough that these athletes get to go to school for free. Now, they'll be paying more in tuition so that the athletic department can get an increased budget.
