Tracking Line Movement @LineProjector
Hey all,

First off, big thanks to BTB for letting me post this here.

As I continue to learn about sports betting, I find my self very intrigued with line movements between the time the line opens and the time the line closes. I think it's interesting the trends you can find, and I feel that some of the data I've pulled out of line movements has made me a more skilled bettor. Since many of you are great about sharing your tips, tricks, and info, I'm hoping to give back to the sports betting community.

I searched quite a few websites trying to find line movements. I found some that list the open and close, or maybe just the last 3 movements. I didn't find any free websites that tracked nearly every line movement, which is what I was after.

To make a long story short, I put together a website that tracks line movements at BetOnline every 15 minutes for MLB, and I will opening that up to football as the season approaches. On the website, I plan on sharing some of the data that I've collected from studying said line movements, and hopefully teaching people some of the things I've learned. Tomorrow, for example, I plan on releasing some data regarding betting dogs in MLB.

http://lineprojector.com/

How To Read the Movements

Basically I list every line movement between the time a line opens and closes. Please refer to the image below. The top number (red highlight) for a particular game is the current number (or within 15 minutes). The bottom number (yellow highlight) for a particular game is the opening number. In between are all of the line movements in chronological order. I plan on making this easier to read in the future, but hope some of you all can take advantage of it the way it is.

Let me know if there's anything you'd like to see, or if you have any questions. You can hit me up on here, twitter - @LineProjector , or email through the site. Thanks!

Make sure to check out his site and give him a follow on Twitter. Should be useful for MLB bettors.

One slight problem with betonline lines. They open early but then move right to what betcris uses for their openers.

RE: Tracking Line Movement @LineProjector
Hey all,

We made some changes to the site today. Rather than having 3 different MLB line movement tables on the same page, we split them into 3 different pages. The new links can be accessed as shown below:

We also added links for a line summary of each game. Basically the summary shows the opening line and current (or closing) line. If a game hasn't started yet, the current line is displayed. If the game has already started, you can assume that the closing line is displayed. The line summary is formatted as shown below:

On a side note, we'll be keeping both NFL and NCAAF movements and line summaries just as we are with MLB. If MLB isn't your thing, be sure and check back during football.

If you all would find anything else beneficial, just let me know.

If you can successfully nab the true openers at BOL and Bookmaker for CFB (not the line two minutes later, but the ACTUAL openers that last for all of 20 seconds), I will forever be in your debt...

Good stuff kbutler

Well I'm kind of at their mercy. It just depends how often they update their XML file. I check every 15 minutes, but if it takes them an hour to update the XML file, my openers are hosed. I can definitely look into Bookmaker.

I believe I've posted this before and a few of you are using it, but we just uploaded a pretty easy to use bet tracker if anyone is looking for one. If you decide to try it, let us know how you like it. Thanks for the feedback so far, guys.

Pretty cool kbutler. Big Thumb thanks for sharing.

I always like seeing how other people keep records - compare and contrast with my own methods.

Any chance you could create something on Google Docs that people can use? I get bored sometimes and want to look over my betting patterns, but don't always have access to my spreadsheets. It's not easy to edit Google Doc spreadsheets on a mobile device, but at least you can look over them.

[Edit] For anyone that wants to have access to an Excel spreadsheet in multiple places, there's a website called DropBox that has a program available to let you do that very easily. You install an app on both devices that you want to share the file between, drop it in the folder on one, and then access it on the other. The only problem I have with it is the iPhone doesn't do a great job with formula intensive spreadsheets. The one I use now won't even open on my phone or iPad.

I've actually uploaded that spreadsheet to google docs before to see how it would work. There was a few problems with the formulas, but mainly the problem was with the filters. Google docs didn't seek to like the excel filters. I may play around with it again in the near future and see if I can get it to work.

BTB has touched on it before, but we felt obligated to write an article about tailing picks on twitter. It may be something most of you already know, but may help the newer folks or lurkers. Some of you may enjoy it.

Tailing Picks on Twitter? Bettor Beware.

RE: Tracking Line Movement @LineProjector
Good stuff, thekbutler. In the conclusion, you mention that 'tailers' should take time to look at the numbers each handicapper is getting and determine if they are getting good ones, or bad. I agree that something like that should be a main focus if your going to tail picks, but I also think that someone that tails either a.) doesn't even have time to track numbers or b.) doesn't really care if they are getting the best number.

Unfortunately you are correct. I find that most times people don't care, they are just looking to make a quick buck. I know I was guilty of tailing at one point. I'm much less pissed about a loss now when it's my own fault, rather than someone else telling me who to bet on.

Thanks for the kind words

RE: Tracking Line Movement @LineProjector
We added tracking for all 17 weeks of the NFL season and all 15 weeks of the College Football season. These line movements are separated by week, and all weeks will be available all season for both sports. The goal will always be to have the current week at the top of the list, but sometimes we're a little slow and can't make updates as quickly as we'd like.

The website is slowing growing and we've got some interesting things planned. Thanks for all the feedback so far.
