RE: Those of you who are NOT into horse racing..
I spend most of my time handicapping ordinary sized human beings playing sports. What makes horse racing so difficult for me is that I must now handicap very undersized human beings riding animals that do not speak.
Most of 'em don't even bathe. The unpredictability of horse racing is a turnoff for me. On Twitter: @beyondthebets |

RE: Those of you who are NOT into horse racing..
yes betting on four legged animals can be unpredictable.. I totally understand why someone wouldn't be attracted to it..
i was born into the game, father owned horses, brother is a trainer. So I pretty much had to like it and I love to bet.. I think its something that takes a lot of time to fully understand and when you are younger its so much easier to learn and absorb information.. Like learning a language, its so much easier to learn a language when you are a kid then an adult. Kids just absorb everything. |

Are you up or down all time in horses?
I don't know anyone who is up. On Twitter: @beyondthebets |

I'm sure I'm down.
I bet a lot less nowadays.. Cant afford a losing streak in horses, you can lose a huge chunk of bank in a short time. |

RE: Those of you who are NOT into horse racing..
I have no idea how to even go about handicapping it, so I don't really care to try. I've placed a bet or two on the Kentucky Derby every year for the past three or four years, and I've never won. Then I'm done until the next Kentucky Derby.
Maybe if I won a bet one year, I'd be more interested in throwing more money at it in the Preakness or whatever.

I really don't mind horse racing, but I've never approached it from a handicapping standpoint. I only bet on the races (the popular ones) for pure entertainment. Usually, it involves a few tri- and superfectas.

I enjoy playing the horses every now and again but its purely recreation, I don't expect to profit from it.
Too much takeout in the parimutal pools, vig on exotics is 25-30% in most states. Way too high to try and overcome that kind of house edge. |

I'm not into horse racing but I want to bet on the triple crown races. Can you guys give me some tips on the Preakness? I'll bet a few horses.

RE: Those of you who are NOT into horse racing..
Bodemeister looked good at the Derby, so I'll probably include him in a few trifectas. Like I said before, not really into the whole "handicapping" horse racing. Just play about $10-$20 worth of trifectas, superfectas, etc. to add some interest.

RE: Those of you who are NOT into horse racing..
Preakness is a very tough field, and you're going to find that no one has a real answer, and if they say they do, bullshit.
Bodemeister figures to be the post-time favorite, but I have to question what the Derby took out of him. His splits were blazing, record setting times, and he's never raced on two weeks rest. Wouldn't be surprised if he blows the field away, but wouldn't be surprised to see him tire late, either. I'll Have Another is a horse you probably have to grudgingly include in exotics. It won't be a fun price- it'll be rather short I'd guess- but this race could set up much the same way, though if Bode doesn't set a blazing pace again, this one might be in trouble. Creative Cause has been the talk of the week much like Derby week, but it's yet to see how that will affect his odds. A horse I'm absolutely including in exotics as he was in a ton of traffic in the Derby, but we've heard the traffic argument one too many times and then see a horse fail to execute on a perfect trip. The non-Derby entrees are going to be where you make your money odds wise, but frankly, none stick out. Tiger Walk and Teeth of the Dog have seen some smart money come their way thus far this week, and that seems to be primarily due to their showing in the Wood Memorial, which I don't put a ton of stock in because I hate Aqueduct in the rain, which it does every time they run the Wood Memorial. Went The Day Well is another horse that got lost in the calvary charge coming home, and was in that 7 wide disaster, ultimately finishing fourth. I like this one to have a rebound performance- she got bumped early which may have caused some of the other issues- but again, you won't make any money betting all Derby horses, even though that's likely to be the one(s) that hit high on the board. If you're just betting for fun, and depending on your funds, I'd recommend the following: $1 EX box: Creative Cause, Bodemesiter, Went The Day Well $1 EX BOX: CC, Bode, I'll Have Another $1 TRI: CC, Bode w/ CC, Bode, I'll Have Another w/ CC, Bode, I'll Have Another, Tiger Walk $1 EX: I'll Have another and Creative Cause w/ Bode, I'll Have Another, Went The Day Well |

So if you want a $1 boxed trifecta, you're really paying much more. I was sorta big on creative cause in the Derby, quite disappointed. Like you mentioned, Bodemeister's pace out of the gate pretty much took 90% of the field out of the race early.

For example, the $1 listed above would cost you 8 dollars. This race is really a mess, frankly. Not likely to be a lot of big pay-outs in any of the exotics, unless something high hits in the pick-4, 6. |

RE: Those of you who are NOT into horse racing..
one reminder if you are going to play exotics do not play them offshore. They are not part of the parimutuel pool and have payout caps. If you are betting tri's and super's bet them at a track or twinspires or someplace that is in the pool
