RE: Sarah Phillips of ESPN
Do we know if Phillips did any of her own writing or was she simply just the "face" of this operation?

RE: Sarah Phillips of ESPN
I firmly believe certain people are outraged because they had this imagination that they were "in" with a beautiful woman who loved sports betting. If this were a guy named Tim Phillips, no one would care.
Whether its BeyondTheBets or whoever other people tried to talk to her, these people had this thing in their head that they had some type of connection with Sarah Phillips. And now that it came out that she was really a he or she was just tricking people, now everyone is up in arms. But its the same people who are outraged that were desperate to believe she was real so fulfill some fantasy in their heads. I read some of her articles, followed her on Twitter, but its the Internet. If anyone is really stunned that you can be duped on the Internet, then you are going to be in for many rude awakenings. I'm not condoning any of her actions, but everyone is making far bigger of a deal than it really is. And it's because everyones fantasies were stomped on. |

Speaking for myself, I was after the truth, and there were many inconsistencies surrounding the Sarah Phillips story - inconsistencies that surfaced almost immediately after her hire. Girl, boy, wolf, whatever, this person was a known scammer and did a lot of bad to a lot of people. Editors at both Covers and ESPN didn't give a shit about their readers, and essentially gave this person a platform to build her brand and to expand her empire in the face of dozens of questions that should have at the very least provoked a full review of her background, credentials, etc. On Twitter: @beyondthebets |

I follow numerous "bettors" or Twitter and the amount of flirting and "Let's DM and chat" were hilarious. Everyone fed her ego, fed this whole "You are a girl and bet, you are an amazing person." And now those same people who propped her up are not thrashing her. Everyone is guilty in this. You should know what you are getting into when you communicate with people on the Internet. |

Yeah, I'll give you that: People were definitely obsessed.
Which is what made this whole thing so frustrating. Because even as you try to tell these people the truth, they refused to listen. Heck, I tried telling Covers the truth back in late November, December and January. They refused to listen and didn't take the issue seriously. On Twitter: @beyondthebets |

You're points are valid for most of the twitter followers.. but 90% of the people in here have questioned her from the start.

RE: Sarah Phillips of ESPN
New here, but follow BTB on twitter and found this thread yesterday. When SJP was super active on covers during last years NBA playoffs, I'd constantly troll her threads trying to expose "her" for what I figured was a guy. I even offered a $1000 wager saying I bet she wouldn't do a short live webcam discussion about basketball...because anyone can get their girlfriend to make a youtube video with a script, but that same girl would never be able to answer sports questions on the fly LIVE. Of course, she wouldn't take my easy money. See the thread below (on page 6 it beings...my handle is TheVagueIdea). Glad this he-she has been exposed.

RE: Sarah Phillips of ESPN
I'm sure the rarity of the female gambler who knew something about sports played a role here. However, I think here "position" at ESPN is why this has grabbed bigger headlines. ESPN being the 1,000 pound gorilla as it is had employed someone that is now being outted as a scam artist.
I've had way too many people already ask me about this last night and today. The story was trending for hours on Twitter... one of the longest trends I've seen on Twitter. For some reason it resonated, people love a scandal. this is a good one. Follow me on Twitter: JayPrimetown |

There's plenty of trolls, plenty of phonies out there, 99.9% of which get zero attention or time. But whether you liked her or hated her, why did everyone (positive or negative) have this obsession with her? |

RE: Sarah Phillips of ESPN
Maybe because she was scamming people.
And using her popularity to do so -- as well as the fact that she was female. Then once she got the "dream job" at ESPN, she even used that to take advantage of a 19 yr old kid though stealing his website. More and more information keeps getting added to the story. It's a big deal. Simple as that. You can keep saying you don't condone her actions, but from the sounds of it, they don't bother you one bit. I get it. There are people that have scammed others before. How many of those people landed a job with ESPN?

RE: Sarah Phillips of ESPN
I think you guys should stop saying "her". IMO there is little to no chance that the actual girl in a few pictures and ONE youtube video is actually the person behind the scamming/lies. That girl is just the face of a crazy asshole guy who figured out that covers would eat up the idea of a hot girl who can talk handicapping...then it snowballed from there. I'd be shocked if I was wrong.

Black Friday/Poker was a blackhole in gambling. This just is one of a million reasons that you should watch who you trust on the Internet. |

It's not just someone giving picks and writing a few articles. Clearly you haven't read one article addressing the issues.

Let's call it the Black Death. As some states like NJ move towards legalizing sports gambling stories like these (that make their way to mainstream) just give lawmakers ammunition to show that gambling brings out low lifes and criminals.
