Case for replay: That Beltran double down the LF line was fair. Drew chalk.
Not to take anything away from Santana, since, from the highlights, his changeup was shades of his younger days. I was staunchly against replay at the start, but more and more, as the umpires are being scrutinized so harshly, I'm coming around on it. Follow me: @skatingtripods |

And you would add Armando Galarraga to the list. It goes both ways. As a lifelong Met fan I can tell you that I never thought last night would ever happen. I've been to many Met games where a pitcher would have no hitter into the 6th and the nervousness and looks in the stadium are unreal. "Is today the day?" Only to have the inevitable happen. I was just waiting for Freese to walk and Molina to rip a single to left. I was in shock when it ended. One of the best 3 moments in my Mets fandom. I don't care if the ball was fair or not. No one can take away that feeling. ![]()

If the MLB was to use instant replay on plays like Beltran's down the line.. how exactly would they enforce it? It's not like tennis where you can stop the play and say it was in or out. Would the ball down the line be a guaranteed double? a single? what it it would have rolled around and he'd end up at third?
You also couldn't just let the play go on and then rule it fair or foul. It happens too fast for the Umps not to make an instant call.

This is a great point. It's a lot like a play getting blown dead in Football or a ref in Hockey calling the puck covered. When the whistle blows, play is dead. I am in favor of replaying Outs and/or Runs, but something like Fair/Foul is out of reach until you have automated refs and no humans at all. |

Would have to be rules set for it. Or umpire's discretion based on the runner, ballpark, etc. Beltran would be at 2nd. Somebody like Jeff Mathis might have to stay at 1st. The ideal scenario would be that teams get one challenge per game and use it however they want, along with fair/foul on HRs being determined automatically. If they're going to do replay, that's how it should be done. It's going to become a major issue here shortly. It'll have to be discussed, especially when somebody really gets screwed over in a big game. Imagine if the one-game playoff with the extra wild card came down to a blown call on a play that could have been reviewable. Follow me: @skatingtripods |

RE: In other news, Johan Santana threw a no hitter today
Why not just let the automated pitch trackers be the new home plate umps? I've always wondered about that. You could still keep an ump out there for safe/out calls on plays at the plate, but have him wired into somebody tracking balls and strikes with a computer.
We have the technology to make balls/strikes calls 100 percent objective. Why not use it?

Don Denkinger. It should be done like hockey. All replay should be done in one central headquarters and they buzz down to the crew chief and either reverse it or don't. As for the balls/strikes thing, the best thing about sports is the human element. Adjusting to officials is part of any game. (head ref calls a lot of holding, official lets hand checking go). I know people will disagree, but it's not like baseball is the only subjective game. ![]()
