Fan reactions
Just wanted to share this, Soccer fans will appreciate it. Granted, I'm not a Timbers fan, but this will get my point across. It's celebrations like these that make the sport so exciting.

RE: Fan reactions
I assume it's bad if I just had to google "timbers soccer" to find out who the hell they were.
![]() Looks like an amazing environment, though.

MLS is still a long way from being household names. One of the things I like most about soccer is the singing. They don't need giant scoreboards to remind them to "clap" or "cheer". They just randomly strike up songs and belt them at the tops of their lungs. Twitter: @AaronMount |

From a stupid outsiders' perspective, it does seem like the MLS is really making an inroads in some of these smaller-but-still-big-enough cities (like Portland, KC, etc). I know that Sporting KC has really gathered a following, especially since the new stadium was built. I'm by no means a soccer hater like a lot of people. Played the sport through high school and enjoy the game, just have never been able to get into it much as a fan.

RE: Fan reactions
I think one of the big problems for most people, when it comes to being a soccer fan, is they don't have a team to cheer for that they really care about. Most people grew up watching other sports with people that had a rooting interest in a particular team, and that's stuck with them. With soccer, nobody's parents or friends cheered for a soccer team, so they don't either. There's no real starting point for people.

While I don't watch a lot of soccer, I've always envied that the fans get things going without the help of the PA system. I do think one thing that helps this is that the action doesn't stop the way it does in most NA games. Commercial breaks can really kill the flow of things when you're there live. I know it's also common place at some of the European hockey games (the one game I experienced had maybe 2000 people there, are while it doesn't compare to the noise levels that could be reached when I occasionally goto Canadiens games, the atmosphere was non-stop and amazing, it blew me away really, and there were 1/10th the amount of people). EDIT: Not sure they'd let me in the Bell centre with a giant drum.....? |
