New Big East - Black Mamba - 12-06-2011 07:41 PM

Does anyone else think this is a bad idea? In general, it's just a cluster, but it is terrible for some of these teams. In particular, Boise is going to get screwed IMO. I understand being an AQ school is crucial, but has anyone from their AD ever looked at some statistics of teams traveling across the country? Those west to east time zone changes are killers and they will be doing it multiple times, likely playing noon EST games (10 AM MST).

Whether they are the better team or not, this schedule will get the best of them IMO.

Any other thoughts?

I think they clearly need a West and East division in football. There is no way that San Diego St. can be expected to make 4 trips back east. This whole realignment thing wreaks and just ruins what college sports were great for, which is regional rivalries.

I'm sure they'll have divisions, but with 14 teams. Their western division will likely consist of Boise, SDSt, SMU, Houston, and some sort of combination of Louisville, Cincy, S Florida and UCF. And they'll likely have 3-4 more games vs the remaining teams, 2 home, 2 away. Still plenty of travel.

Sorry, disregard 14 teams, forgot a few were leaving. So will it be 10 or 12? And still plenty of travel in their "division"

It's absurd that the conferences have autonomy to let in whoever they want. The NCAA should tell them who they're taking. Boise State in the Big East is ridiculous. I get it. They have nobody out there who is up to their talent level and the Pac-12 doesn't want them for fear of having their conference exposed as a fraud.

Tough shit.

College football and the politics running it are getting to be too much. A Harris poll voter putting Houston over Oklahoma State? Seriously? The NCAA is such a circus that they have clowns like that guy voting?

I love CFB and CBB more than the NFL and NBA because of the pure emotion of the athletes and the concept that polls make every game matter.

This Big East conference is an embarrassment. I don't blame the programs for joining. I blame the NCAA for being a joke of an operation.

I agree with everything itt. Boise St and SDSU travel schedules are going to be brutal no matter who else is in the "west" division.

Everything is so out of control that I don't even know who should do what any more.

College athletics, especially football has so much money at stake that everything is going to be ruined if somebody doesn't stop this runaway train.

I know everyone is thinking about this in terms of football, and rightly so, but in bball the big east is going to cover a ton of states. The travel might be even worse in bball. They will basically have a team in every major geographic region.

San Diego St. and Boise St. are both football only invites.

Gotcha. Makes more sense. Thanks for clearing that up.

+1

It's all really starting to make me sick. It hasn't ruined college sports for me, but seeing everything that's happening just gets me sad. Like, what the hell is going on? Right, guys, let's have a system that forces San Diego State to join the Big EAST just to have a shot at ever playing in a meaningful game. That makes sense.

I'm going to re-read Death to the BCS, but that will only make me angrier. The fact that all these elitest snob fools are making gobs of money out of all this — none of which makes THE FANS happy — makes me all the more upset.

RE: New Big East - Whiskeytown - 12-07-2011 08:38 AM

between the BCS and all this realignment.... agree with Tripods and the Chief.

just wake me when it's settled. i know it's not organized/governed the same as a pro league, but shouldn't the NCAA be able to do what the NHL did, and some how just do ONE massive realigment, get some geographical common sense restored, try to hold on to good/traditional rivalries, etc....

AND, conferences should be for ALL sports. "football only" is stupid and confusing.

also, when WVU goes B12 (and no longer plays Pitt, etc) who's taking a roadtrip from Morgantown to TEXAS? (same as for all these other schools joining the Big East from the west and midwest). part of the fun of college is having real rivalries from neighboring colleges/states. the whole thing has gotten silly, we all know it's about money/ratings etc, and to some extent we're all somewhat OK with it as realists.... but they could make their money AND still keep fans happy.
