Feeling it in Philadelphia: Riding 6-game win streak, Phillies now 15/1 to win World Series

September 12, 2012

Remember last year when a man placed a pair of early-September bets on the St. Louis Cardinals at 999/1 to win the World Series despite them being seven games back in the Wild Card?

That story had a happy ending: The man won $250,000.

Is it about to happen again?

East Coast Gambler, a well-known blogger who is extremely active on Twitter, recently placed a $20 bet on the Philadelphia Phillies to win the World Series at 1,000-to-1 odds. The payoff is a modest $20,000, and the bet remains a long shot. But it’s hard to argue with the value he got.

Since ECG placed his bet, the Phillies have promptly won three straight games—extending their current win streak to six—and are now within four games of the Wild Card-leading Cardinals. As a result, oddsmakers have been forced to make a significant adjustment to their futures.

The current odds: 15/1.

We went down to The Strip on Tuesday (yes, “a day late and a dollar short”), and one book still had the Phillies listed at 300/1. However, upon arriving at the window, the ticket writer delivered the bad news.

“It just got hit hard not too long ago,” he said. “Down to 100/1.”

Even THAT seems like a good number at this point.
