College football Week 5 lines: Arkansas, once a favorite in offseason, now a big dog at A&M

September 24, 2012

Week 5 point spreads for college football were released over the weekend, and we’ve provided all the updated lines (along with openers) below.

For the second straight week, we saw very little movement. Thirty-three of 49 lined games either didn’t move or moved by a point or less, a far cry from the first few weeks when lines regularly moved between four and seven points. However, some games had modest movement, including the following:

  • No. 12 Texas opened as a 2-point underdog at Oklahoma State, but is now listed as a 2.5-point favorite. We projected the Longhorns to be 1-point favorites and were stunned to see them open as dogs, particularly considering the sharp support they’ve received since the summer months.
  • How far has Arkansas fallen? Texas A&M opened -11 against the Razorbacks and is now -13.5, a clear sign that sharp bettors think John L. Smith is leading a sinking ship. In offseason Games of the Year lines, Arkansas was a 2.5-point road favorite.
  • Western Kentucky (+1.5) has covered the spread 13 straight times dating back to last season, and are listed as a one-point road underdog against Arkansas State. The line opened as a pick ‘em.
