2013 NBA Rookie of the Year Odds: Top picks win about half the time, and Davis is favored

June 29, 2012

That didn’t take long.

Less than 24 hours after the 2012 NBA Draft concluded, the Greek already released odds on who will win the 2013 NBA Rookie of the Year Award.

Not surprisingly, No. 1 pick Anthony Davis—frequently referred to as the only “transcendent” talent in this year’s crop of players—is the favorite at +350. He’s followed by college teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (6-to-1) and then Thomas Robinson, Harrison Barnes and Bradley Beal all at 8-to-1.

That last trio is mildly intriguing, considering those players were thought to be more “NBA-ready” than either Davis or Kidd-Gilchrist, who might take a little more time to develop.

But this is still Davis’ award to lose. The top pick has been named Rookie of the Year in three of the past four years and 14 times in the past three decades. So, the No. 1 pick wins the award about half the time.

Here’s a look at all the winners since 2000, along with their draft position.

2012: Kyrie Irving (1)
2011: Blake Griffin (1)
2010: Tyreke Evans (4)
2009: Derrick Rose (1)
2008: Kevin Durant (2)
2007: Brandon Roy (6)
2006: Chris Paul (4)
2005: Emeka Okafor (2)
2004: LeBron James (1)
2003: Amare Stoudemire (9)
2002: Pau Gasol (3)
2001: Mike Miller (5)
2000: Steve Francis (2)
